Lower Creek WWTP Lenoir, NC

General Description

The city of Lenoir, NC is located in Caldwell County, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Lower Creek WWTP services the city and surrounding area of approximately 50,000 residents.

An existing dryer system for dewatered biosolids incurred excessive maintenance costs over the last few years. The City of Lenoir purchased a new belt dryer from Gryphon Environmental. The Gryphon dryer is energy efficient and creates high quality fertilizer to be used on local farmland, creating increased revenues for the city. The fertilizer is dry, pasteurized, and free of bacteria, creating Class A biosolids. KWS provided a screw conveyor to transfer dried product from Gryphon dryer to a bucket elevator for load out.

KWS Special Features

KWS selected a shaftless screw conveyor to transfer dried biosolids from the dryer to the bucket elevator. KWS shaftless spirals are the hardest and toughest in the industry and will last at least 10 years without replacement. The KWS one-piece flanged drive shaft is guaranteed for the life of the equipment.

The KWS shaftless conveyor trough and covers were constructed from 304 stainless steel to provide corrosion protection. KWS engineered a custom inlet chute to interface to the discharge of the Gryphon dryer and transition to the conveyor. A special flush-end discharge was required to mate to the existing bucket elevator. KWS also provided an emergency stop switch to immediately shut down the conveyor if an adverse running condition is noticed. Emergency stop switches help keep plant personnel safe along with protecting the loadout system from damage.
