General Description
Ferrara Candy was founded in 1908 and began by selling candy-coated almonds. Since then they have made some of Americas most loved candies. With 24 different types of confections, Ferrara Candy continues to innovate and create new products.
Ferrara Candy was expanding their product line with a new brand of candy and needed conveying and processing equipment for the new line. KWS provided a screw conveyor as an integral part of the new processing line. Coarse sugar is stored in a silo and metered to the KWS screw conveyor by a rotary feeder. The KWS screw conveyor travels through a wall and discharges into a sugar melter.

KWS Advantages
KWS worked with Ferrara Candy to determine the exact requirements for the application. Coarse sugar is a food product, but since the screw conveyor was located at the beginning of the process, expensive polishing of the stainless steel surfaces was not required. By understanding the application, KWS was able to offer a very cost-effective stainless steel screw conveyor for a food application. KWS designed the screw conveyor with the shiny 2B mill finish of the stainless steel material so additional polishing was not required. 2B mill finish is the standard finish for gauge material and has a finish of 80 Ra.
Special Features
The KWS screw conveyor was designed with the drive unit on the inlet end, locating the drive unit outside of the sanitary room and allowing for easier access for routine maintenance. The inlet flange of the screw conveyor was designed to match the rotary feeder. KWS provided support locations on the screw conveyor for ease of assembly and erection. The KWS screw conveyor was supplied with lip seals at the shaft protrusions. The lip seals were perfect for the coarse sugar and the most cost-effect option. The KWS screw conveyor was installed at Ferrara Candy without any issues and is successfully operating as part of the new process line.
